HE ORANGA POUTAMA – KAIWHAKAHAERE
TPTOTA in partnership with Sport and Recreation New Zealand provide activities and opportunities for the community through the He Oranga Poutama programme. He Oranga Poutama has three broad outcome domains – Leadership for the Future, Developing Participation Opportunities and Strengthening Infrastructure.
Specific He Oranga Poutama programme outcomes are:
- Kaiwhakahaere participating as leaders in their community
- Increased opportunities for whānau to explore, learn and participate as Māori in sport and traditional physical recreation
- Revitalisation and further development of sport and traditional physical recreation.
TPTOTA have Kaiwhakahaere (sport and event coordinators) on hand working towards achieve these outcomes and to assist the community to reach their goals.
Within the He Oranga Poutama programme Kaiwhakahaere develop and facilitate opportunities in the following areas:
Community Programmes
Community based programmes, planning and coordination (e.g. holiday programmes, promotional events, leadership programmes, recreation short programmes) providing sporting elements as part of delivery sports and physical activity promotion, train the trainer programmes, resource training and development, volunteer development and WHIMM development as volunteers
Community Sport
Sport facilitation and support, sport coordination, coaching development, code development, networking, sport and recreation club development, sporting facility access for community groups, existing sport/new sport promotion, skill development
Management support
Māori sports management strategy and plan for the region, planning and committee membership, infrastructure development, governance involvement, programme planning and design support, funding opportunities and pathway support, advocacy, resource development, information sharing. |

Event planning and design, sporting event management, event management training, event support, collaborative delivery, Iwi event management and support

Sports Awards
Facilitation and management of the Te Arawa Māori regional sports awards, representation at the national awards and Tamariki ora day
Representation development
Assist in the development of Te Arawa sports (e.g. Te Arawa Touch), Te Arawa representation nationally at all levels (e.g. participation, governance, coaching) promotion of international opportunities
Traditional Māori Sport Development and Traditional Māori Games (as Sport)
Waka Sports – e.g. Waka Ama, Waka Tētē, Waka Taua, Waka Kopapa,
Martial Arts – Mau Rakau, Mamau, Mekemeke
Sports – Ki ō Rahi, Running – Mountain Running
Traditional Māori Recreational Development
Kapa Haka, Traditional Māori games (as Recreation),
Hunting, Mahinga Kaimoana (Diving, Fishing etc)
