Te Arawa Pride
TE ARAWA PRIDE is a three year SPARC active community project delivered by Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa to reengage and re-culture Te Arawa in collective iwi development through mediums of sport, recreation and traditional physical activity.
Project priorities are:

Pūmanawa 1 - Culture and Identity
Provide a strength based approach to support the implementation and development of local initiatives of re-engagement and re-affirmation. |

Pūmanawa 2 - Community Sport Development
Provide quality sport and physical recreation opportunities, pathways and learning. |

Pūmanawa 3 - Leadership
Utilise local sporting clubs, Te Arawa sporting role models and local expertise to mentor, support and develop relevant sports and activities.

Pūmanawa 4 - Infrastructure
Provide opportunities and supprt for WHIMMs to development relevant, sustainable events and activities.

Pūmanawa 5 - Health and Wellbeing
Develop a coordinated 'initiatives' approach aimed at increasing access, greater participation and positive promotion.

Pūmanawa 6 - Coaching
Provide coaching development and training initiatives to increase skilled, active coaches across sporting codes. |

Pūmanawa 7 - Volunteers
Develop the culture of whānaungatanga through supporting and acknowledging volunteers and the huge contributions they make. |

Pūmanawa 8 - Evaluation
Implement a robust system of evaluation and monitoring from a kaupapa Maori / Te Arawa base incorporating industry expertise and organisations. |
A multilayered approach through positive activity and learning in a culturally appropriate environment will be incorporated; using the TE ARAWA GAMES as a strategy vehicle which will create a platform to celebrate ‘Te Arawatanga’ making provision for various pathways of collective cohesion and interaction for Whanau, Hapu, Iwi and Marae.
The Te Arawa Games event calendar from 2010 onwards will incorporate the following:
- Hoe Waka Challenge
- Individual Marae Games
- Indoor Hapu Challenges
- Winter Hapu Challenges
- Summer Hapu Challenges
- Inter-Hapu Sports challenge and activities
- Regional Inter-Iwi Sports competition
- National Inter-Iwi Sports competition
- Coaching, volunteerism, mentorship training
An Iwi delegate’s forum makes up part of the Te Arawa Pride project strategy and aligns to the Te Arawa Pride project steering committee. Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa seek increased involvement from delegates who are able to represent their Whanau, Hapu, Iwi or Marae (WHIMMs)and Māori/community interested in general. Delegates will help shape the initiatives with in the project and provide advice and practical input.
