Matarua
Matarua is the application of traditional Māori methodologies in armed and unarmed hand to hand self-defence. Matarua delivers excellence through the re-discovery, development and continual re-engagement in traditional Māori and Te Arawa disciplines and cultural practice through the major medium of martial arts.
Matarua’s organisational ‘mission’ is to provide
- A safe educational environment for all members
- Learning to equip the future generations with knowledge of their heritage and culture
- All members support in the pursuit of excellence and personal development
- An internationally recognised martial art performing on the world stage
After many years of tuition and mentoring under the guidance of Wetini Mitai Ngatai, Tukiterangi formally took on the mantle of tutor of Matarua. In 2002 the Matarua Federation of Traditional Maori Martial Arts was officially registered as a Charitable Trust and in 2003 the first intake of students was accepted.
Matarua provides a yearly, one intake (40 week, 4 x 10 week terms, beginning in February/March) martial art training programme in Rotorua. Based at Rotorua Intermediate School Matarua provides Monday and Thursday trainings from 5pm onwards.
Times vary according to the level and age of the student. Classes are designed for children (7years of age and older) and adults (teenagers and older). Classes are physically intense and allow members to increase their own personal fitness in a short amount of time. Matarua costs vary including uniforms etc so please contact Matarua directly for clarity.
Matarua acknowledges students through a grading and graduation system over a period of three years. Following the completion of the year three programme, a graduate high level training programme is available in mau patu and other appropriate weaponry and disciplines. Matarua help students get to develop skills learnt in individual and group challenges, an annual competition tournament and through representation at the world martial arts festival annually in Korea.
